- Formally opened by Prince Andrew, Duke of York, in December 2014
- Built partly around a preserved c.1845 building that was originally part of the Great Western Railway works school, on the edge of Swindon's historic Railway Village, and retains a preserved 1870 cast-iron water tower on site
- Rated 'Inadequate' at its first inspection in 2017, which led it to leave its original sponsor arrangement and join Activate Learning Education Trust (the same trust that runs UTC Reading); it has since improved to 'Requires improvement' at both its 2020 and May 2024 inspections but has not yet reached 'Good'
- Roll of only around 191-193 pupils in 2024/25 against a 600-place capacity - well under a third full, making it one of the more under-subscribed UTCs in the country
